Steven Star's Fette Sau

Fette Sau (German for “fat pig”) is a barbecue restaurant specializing in dry-rubbed meats, sourced from small, local farms and smoked in-house. The menu changes daily, with a rotating selection of meats available for purchase by the pound. The sides are kept simple and include burnt end baked beans, broccoli salad, pickles, sauerkraut and potato chips. The drink list offers nine beers on tap, plus a cider, and an extensive list of North American bourbon and whiskeys. Picnic tables are the primary form of seating, giving the restaurant a communal atmosphere. The space has an industrial feel, with its reclaimed wood, cement floor and exposed beam ceiling. Fette Sau is a transplant to Philadelphia from Brooklyn by way of partnership between restaurateurs Stephen Starr and Joe Carroll, marking Joe’s first restaurant outside Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Fette Sau is the standout, for three reasons that might seem counterintuitive at first: It doesn’t feel a thing like Brooklyn, there’s not really a whole lot of smoke cloaking its meats, and there’s no one there to bring food to your table...But let’s back up a minute, to the curb cut on Frankford Avenue where Starr sold Carroll on expanding to Philadelphia. The property sits next door to Frankford Hall, Starr’s biergarten, and it was the spitting image of Carroll’s picnic-tabled Brooklyn haunt....Who’d have thought that the best thing to happen to Philly’s barbecue scene would come from Brooklyn—and a guy, in Carroll, who first tasted traditional ’cue as a college kid at a long-gone joint in Manhattan? Probably only Stephen Starr. So give the former concert promoter some credit. The man knows how to sign a solid act.

Each year, Mr. Contractor hosts a company holiday party in appreciation to the employees for all their hard work. Since most of us live in Philadelphia, because our company is located in Philadelphia, and while we all work in Philadelphia - it only makes sense that the locations our holiday parties always be in our Philadelphia neighborhood. We use this as an opportunity to support or local area businesses and highlight the event on our website for our customer. This year, Mr. Contractor chose Fette Sau, a Steven Star restaurant that opened in 2012. This restaurant is located a few minutes drive down the same street as Mr. Contractor. The atmosphere is perfect for hosting a company party for 35 employees. The food was great, the atmosphere was awesome, and the fun was contagious.
